UPDATE (6/5): Bridge beam removal has been pushed back due to forecast storms. Beam removal over I-66 West is now planned for the nights of June 8 and 9; removal over I-66 East is planned for the nights of June 10-12.

FAIRFAX – Demolition of the Cedar Lane Bridge over I-66 in Vienna continues during daytime and overnight hours this weekend and next week. Lane closures will be required on I-66 East and West nightly to safely conduct bridge deck demolition and beam removal over the roadway. The bridge is being demolished and rebuilt to accommodate the widening of I-66, as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

What’s Ahead this Weekend and the Week of June 7:

• Work to demolish the bridge span over I-66 East will continue during the overnight hours tonight, June 4, through Saturday, June 6. Crews will use jackhammers, saw cutters, and hoe rams to demolish the concrete bridge deck and walls. 
• During overnight hours Friday, June 5, and Saturday, June 6, the old bridge beams over I-66 West will be removed. 
• Early next week, daytime demolition is planned for the remaining bridge span (not over I-66 travel lanes) for the bridge pier along I-66 West.
• The old bridge beams over I-66 East will also be removed early next week during the overnight hours.   

What I-66 Drivers Should Expect:

• Tonight, Thursday, June 4, through Saturday night, June 6, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. nightly, I-66 East will be reduced to one lane near Cedar Lane.
• On Friday, June 5, and Saturday, June 6, between 9:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. nightly, I-66 West will be reduced to one lane near Cedar Lane for crews to remove overhead bridge beams. Drivers on I-66 West should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages while bridge beams are removed. 
• Overnight lane closures Monday, June 8, through Wednesday, June 10, will reduce eastbound I-66 to one travel between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages while bridge beams are removed. 
• Work schedules are weather dependent and subject to change.  

Recent Construction Progress:

• Demolition of the two bridge spans over I-66 West and the Metrorail tracks is complete, as well as of the northern bridge abutment.
• Demolition of the bridge span over I-66 East travel lanes is underway.  

The future Cedar Lane Bridge is scheduled to open in November 2020.  The new bridge will consist of two 12-foot lanes (one lane in each direction). A shared-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists will be built on the east side of the bridge, as well as a sidewalk on the west side of the bridge. The bridge will also have seven-foot-tall fencing on both sides. 

During the Cedar Lane Bridge closure, a posted detour routes drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians to Gallows Road to cross I-66 using either Cottage Street (north side of I-66) or Hilltop Road and Route 29/Lee Highway (south side of I-66). 

Additionally, the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project is partnering with Fairfax County to enhance transit services in the vicinity of the bridge. Fairfax Connector Routes 462 and 467 are offering increased frequency and expanded hours during the bridge closure to assist affected travelers.
