FAIRFAX - VDOT asks that drivers continue to avoid nonessential travel in northern Virginia during rush hour and overnight, as weather transitions between snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain. Crews will be working around the clock to plow snow, treat for icy conditions, remove downed trees and monitor for flooding.

What's Happening Now

• The National Weather Service's Winter Storm Warning and Winter Weather Advisory remain in place with impacts for VDOT's Northern Virginia District today. 
• Crews are working throughout the district under changing weather conditions, from heavier snow accumulations in the western side in Loudoun County to a fluctuating mix of sleet, snow and freezing rain across the rest of the district. Crews are working to treat roads and will begin to plow roads in areas where 2 inches or more of snow has accumulated.
• In preparation for winds and accumulating ice, VDOT is also coordinating with tree contractors to quickly reopen roads that may become blocked by downed trees, branches and debris.

VDOT Asks Drivers and Residents To:

• Continue to avoid nonessential travel, particularly as weather may transition to include freezing temperatures and high winds, with possible flooding and icy conditions. If road conditions become hazardous, delay travel for your safety and to give crews time to clear the roads.
• Closely monitor news and weather reports for the latest updates. Conditions are forecast to vary widely across the district, with accumulations of snow, sleet and ice expected along with high winds. As precipitation changes over, roads may quickly become icy and slick, and visibility may be limited.
• Particularly in western areas of the district where snow is expected to accumulate, please park in driveways or on the same side of the street to allow plows room to pass. When two inches have accumulated, residents in these areas can also monitor the status of plows in their neighborhoods at www.vdotplows.org. 
• When travel is essential, allow extra time for trips, significantly reduce speeds, brake lightly and allow plenty of following distance. Ensure enough gas, wiper fluid, proper tires, medication, and an emergency car kit. See more winter weather tips.

How Residents Can Help

• Monitor weather closely, as forecasts can improve or worsen quickly. 
• Adjust commutes, telework, or avoid driving during a storm and after until road conditions improve.
• Park in driveways or on the same side of the street.
• Wait to shovel driveways until plows have come, as they will push some snow back.
• Have enough gas, wiper fluid, proper tires, medication, and an emergency car kit.
• Be patient: crews need time and room to work.
• While we do not clear sidewalks, crews are asked to be mindful, especially near schools. There is often limited room to pile snow in significant storms, to make roads passable. Residents and businesses are asked to clear near their properties.Check with your locality for ordinances.
