Snow and Freezing Rain to Impact Travel Today
Avoid travel as heavy snow bands and icy conditions possible; Prepare now to delay travel Monday a.m.

Drivers are asked to monitor forecasts closely and avoid travel for safety in areas of the region where snow and freezing rain will impact roads today. Pockets of heavier snow may limit visibility and stick to the pavement, with a mix of freezing rain that could quickly make roads slick.
Drivers are also asked to prepare now for impacts to the Monday morning commute, and plan to delay travel or telework if possible.
What's Happening Now
  • See Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories from the National Weather Service through 4 a.m. Monday, to include snow, ice and freezing rain for portions of northern Virginia, with potential accumulations of up to 8 inches in western Loudoun County.
  • Crews pretreated interstates and problem areas on major roads overnight and finishing this morning, which will assist crews at the onset of snow, but drivers are asked to avoid driving during the snow and to prepare now for impacts to the Monday morning rush hour.
  • Crews will plow and treat roads through the day in areas where snow accumulates. Crews first focus on interstates and primary routes, roads with vital emergency and public facilities, then lower-volume routes and neighborhood streets.
  • Road conditions may vary and deteriorate through the day as bands move through and precipitation may alternate between snow and freezing rain.

VDOT Asks Drivers and Residents to:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during snow and freezing rain, and remain off of snow-covered or icy roads. Delaying travel gives crews and equipment space to treat roads and to plow snow or slush from travel lanes.
  • In areas where significant accumulation is expected, park in driveways or on the same side of the street to allow plows room to pass.
  • Make plans now to telework or delay travel Monday morning until conditions have improved. Give crews time to plow and treat roads.
  • Continue to closely monitor weather, as forecasts can improve or worsen quickly.
  • While driving during winter weather is not advised, if you must, allow extra time for trips, significantly reduce speeds, brake lightly and allow plenty of following distance. Ensure enough gas, wiper fluid, proper tires, medication, and an emergency car kit.
