LEESBURG – The Virginia Department of Transportation invites residents to a “pardon our dust” meeting Thursday, Oct. 17 to learn more about work to replace the traffic signal at Route 7 (East Market Street) and Battlefield Parkway with a grade-separated interchange to help improve traffic flow and safety and relieve congestion, as well as provide new options for pedestrians and cyclists in the area. 

Other project improvements include:

• Removing the signal and modifying the intersection just west on Route 7 at Cardinal Park Drive
• Adding auxiliary lanes on eastbound Route 7 between the Leesburg Bypass and River Creek Parkway
• Building a new shared-use path and sidewalk along Battlefield Parkway 

Stop by between 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. to learn about the project, construction schedule, traffic impacts and meet with the project team at John W. Tolbert Jr. Elementary School, 691 Potomac Station Drive, Leesburg, VA 20176. A presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m.

When this project is complete, drivers will have a signal-free trip along Route 7 between City Center Boulevard in Sterling and Berryville (about 35 miles).

Beginning in fall 2020, Battlefield Parkway will be closed between Russell Branch Parkway and the Marketplace at Potomac Station shopping center entrance for about ten months; traffic will be detoured via Fort Evans Road to the north, and Russell Branch Parkway and Crosstrail Boulevard to the south.

During construction, traffic will be maintained on Route 7 at all times. Drivers can expect off-peak lane closures, and are encouraged to visit 511virginia.org for real-time traffic information. 

The $77.3 million project is expected to be complete in fall 2021.
