Reminder: Route 123/I-66 Interchange Traffic Changes This Week
Ramp from 123 North to I-66 West to close on or about Thursday, April 18; Drivers will use temporary traffic signals, new left-turn lanes to access highway
FAIRFAX, Va. – Motorists are advised that traffic changes are scheduled to go into effect at the Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road)/I-66 interchange early Thursday morning, April 18, weather permitting. The current ramp from Route 123 North to I-66 West will be closed during overnight hours on Wednesday night, and beginning early Thursday morning a new, temporary left-turn-only traffic signal will allow drivers to access I-66 West. This new traffic pattern will remain in place for approximately two years while a new bridge and ramps are built as part of the I-66 Outside the Beltway Project.
Changes include:
- The loop ramp from Route 123 North to I-66 West will be closed. Drivers will access I-66 West by turning left at a temporary traffic signal using two new left-turn-only lanes and new roadway which will join the existing Route 123 South ramp to I-66 West (see graphic below)
- Two travel lanes will continue through the interchange in each direction
- Drivers traveling south on Route 123 should remain alert for the new traffic signal
During construction, travel speeds on Route 123 through the interchange will be reduced to 35 mph. Drivers are reminded to use caution and pay attention to lane markings and roadway signs, and expect additional construction-related detours and additional traffic pattern changes at the interchange as work progresses.

When completed in December 2022, the reconstructed Route 123/I-66 interchange will provide direct access to and from the new I-66 Express Lanes for both eastbound and westbound travelers. A new shared-use path through the interchange will connect the new I-66 corridor trail and planned trails in the City of Fairfax.
Traffic pattern changes at the Route 123/I-66 interchange beginning on or about April 18, 2019. Drivers traveling on Route 123 North will access I-66 West by turning left at a traffic signal and joining the ramp from Route 123 South to I-66 West.
