Provide Feedback on Projects, Initiatives at May 13 Northern Virginia Spring Transportation Meeting

FAIRFAX – The public is invited to learn more about and provide feedback on the evaluation and selection criteria for funding transportation projects across the region:

The meeting will have several components and opportunities to share feedback, including:

  • The Commonwealth Transportation Board’s public hearing for the FY 2020-2025 Six-Year Improvement Program, which allocates public funds to highway, road, bridge, rail, bicycle, pedestrian, public transportation, and transportation demand management projects. The draft identifies projects proposed for inclusion in the final program, which will be approved by the CTB in June. This is the third round of Virginia’s SMART SCALE, which scores projects on factors of safety, congestion reduction, accessibility, land use, environmental quality, and economic development. Comments will also be accepted for new projects valued over $25 million.

  • The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission and Virginia Railway Express will have displays and information available for review and comment related to projects, evaluation and selection criteria for funding (meeting required per §33.2-214.3 of the code of Virginia). Participating organizations will be available to discuss how congestion is being addressed in the region, funding programs and multimodal transportation projects impacting Northern Virginians.

  • Open house for VTrans, Virginia’s long-range, statewide, multimodal transportation plan that outlines a vision and goals for transportation in the Commonwealth. This open house will be the first of four during the plan’s update that will identify investment priorities and guide transportation agencies’ strategies and programs.

  • Presentation on the I-95 Corridor Study (5:45 p.m.)
    In the 2019 Session (SJR 276 and HJR 581), the General Assembly requested that the CTB study the portion of the Interstate 95 corridor between the Thornburg interchange (Exit 118) and the Springfield interchange (Exit 170) and potential financing options for improvements.
