New Turn Lane Opens at Baron Cameron Avenue in Reston
Triple-left turn from Route 7 complete to improve traffic flow

RESTON – A third left-turn lane from westbound Route 7 to Baron Cameron Avenue opened to traffic today, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The additional lane is expected to ease congestion through this heavily traveled intersection, as construction continues between Reston Avenue and Jarrett Valley Drive for the Route 7 Corridor Improvements project.

Drivers turning right from eastbound Route 7 to Baron Cameron are reminded to follow signs to yield to oncoming traffic before merging into the through lane.

This is the first in a set of major improvements along the seven-mile corridor that broke ground earlier this summer, including adding a third lane in each direction, building shared-use paths along each side, replacing and raising the bridge over Difficult Run, adding a pedestrian underpass for Colvin Run Mill Park access, and other intersection, bicycle and pedestrian improvements along the corridor (see a detailed list of improvements). The entire project is scheduled to be complete in summer 2024.

Drivers are reminded that the speed limit along Route 7 has been temporarily reduced to 45 miles per hour in active work zones between Reston Avenue and Delta Glen Court. During construction, drivers are asked to use caution and be alert to signs, flaggers and potential police direction in work zones.

To learn more about work planned, visit connectroute7.org/news_updates/traffic_alerts.asp. Lane closures for the following week are posted each Friday.

Shirley/Dewberry is the contractor for the $252.9 million design-build contract. The project’s total cost, about $313.9 million, includes federal, state (including Smart Scale), Northern Virginia Transportation Authority and Fairfax County funds.
