VDOT News - Northern Virginia

FAIRFAX, Va. – Temporary daytime stoppages of up to 15 minutes are planned on Route 29 between University Boulevard and Heathcote Boulevard in Gainesville on Monday, January 7, and on University Boulevard on Friday, January 11. 

The stoppages are needed for blasting of storm water drain trenches at the site of the Gainesville Park and Ride Lot being built near the intersection of Route 29 and University Boulevard. Residents and drivers in the area may hear loud noises and should expect travel delays.

Details include:

• Monday, January 7
  • Temporary stoppages of up to 15 minutes between 11 a.m. and noon on northbound and southbound Route 29 between University Boulevard and Heathcote Boulevard
  • The ramp from westbound I-66 to northbound Route 29 (Exit 43B) will also be temporarily closed for up to 15 minutes
• Friday, January 11
  • Temporary stoppages of up to 15 minutes between 11 a.m. and noon on University Boulevard between Route 29 and I-66
  • The turn lanes from northbound and southbound Route 29 to University Boulevard will also be temporarily closed for up to 15 minutes

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.

The work is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project, which is scheduled to be completed in December 2022. The first part of the Gainesville Park and Ride Lot will open in 2019 with 960 parking spaces to serve carpool, vanpool, and commuter bus travellers. 

VDOT and its private partners provide regular email updates to the public on traffic impacts due to construction activity. The public can sign up for these alerts at Transform66.org.
