CHANTILLY – Multiple lanes of southbound Route 28 near the on-ramp from eastbound Sterling Boulevard to southbound Route 28 will be closed during overnight hours this weekend for underground pipe installation work, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. The two ramps from Sterling Boulevard to southbound Route 28 also will be closed, with a signed detour in place. Details are:

Friday night, May 31:

• 8 p.m.: Ramps from Sterling Boulevard to southbound Route 28 to close
• 9 p.m.: Far right lane on southbound Route 28 to close
• 10 p.m.: Second right lane on southbound Route 28 to close
• At least two lanes to remain open
• All lanes to reopen by 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 1

Saturday night, June 1:

• 9 p.m.: Ramps from Sterling Boulevard to southbound Route 28 to close

Two lanes on southbound Route 28 to close

Left shoulders on south- and northbound Route 28 to close

• 11 p.m.: Left lane on northbound Route 28 to close
• At least two lanes to remain open
• All lanes to reopen by 9 a.m. on Sunday, June 2

Crews will resume work next weekend, June 7-9, with lane and ramp closures happening in this area again during overnight hours. All work is weather dependent.

Drivers should expect delays and plan accordingly.

This pipe installation work is needed for an approximate two-mile widening of Route 28 from the Dulles Toll Road to Sterling Boulevard (Route 846), which is expected to be completed by mid-2020. This project is part of VDOT’s larger Route 28 Widening Project, which completed the widening of several sections of the major route near Dulles Airport in 2017. The Route 28 spot widening is funded by the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority and the Route 28 Tax District, and is administered by VDOT.
