Give Plows Room on Snow Day Two
Continue to stay off roads as crews work to clear accumulating snow
FAIRFAX--On the second day of winter weather across northern Virginia, drivers are asked to continue to avoid unnecessary travel for crews to safely clear accumulating snow.
What's Happening Now
- With continued snowfall expected throughout the day, crews are working around the clock to plow accumulating snow and will continue making rounds during the storm and after until all roads are passable.
- Crews first focus on interstates and primary routes, roads with vital emergency and public facilities, then lower-volume routes and neighborhood streets.
- As it is still actively snowing, roads may quickly become snow-covered even if a plow truck has recently made a pass.
Info for Drivers and Residents:
- Continue to avoid unnecessary travel while snow continues and after until conditions have improved. This is the safest choice for drivers, and gives crews space to plow accumulated snow from travel lanes and apply salt and sand.
- If shoveling snow, check out this video for some tips. Remember, the plow will push some snow back.
- If you absolutely must drive, stay as far behind plows as possible, and significantly reduce speeds. Plow trains--staggered plows spanning all lanes of the road--are actively working interstates and need room to safely work.
