ROUTE 29 BRIDGE PROJECT AWARDED IN LYNCHBURG
LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) at its May meeting has awarded W. C. English, Inc. of Lynchburg a $16.9 million contract for replacement of the bridges on Route 29 north and south over Norfolk-Southern Railroad in the City of Lynchburg.
The bridges, commonly called the "Jumbo Bridges," are located near the Falwell Airport and carry over 38,000 vehicles a day. The Route 29 northbound structure was built in 1953 and is in fair condition. The southbound structure was built in 1936 and is in poor condition.
Due to the bridges’ ages and conditions, replacement of the structures is the most practical and cost-effective solution to meet and maintain future transportation needs.
During construction, two lanes of traffic will be maintained in either direction from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The VDOT Lynchburg District serves Amherst, Appomattox, Buckingham, Campbell, Charlotte, Cumberland, Halifax, Nelson, Pittsylvania and Prince Edward Counties.
