WATCH FOR POTENTIAL REFREEZE ON AREA ROADS
VDOT crews will monitor and treat potentially icy road conditions throughout the night
SUFFOLK—Following the winter storm that dropped multiple inches of snow throughout Hampton Roads, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews continue to clear interstates and state-maintained primaries. Motorists are being warned that a drop in temperature could lead to a refreeze on pavement and wet spots on the roadways should be considered ice.
Current road conditions are moderate, which means that snow, slush or ice may still be present on major portions of roadways. When snow or ice is on the pavement, travel is hazardous and should be avoided. Crews across the region will continue to treat roads with salt to break down ice and apply sand in critical spots to enhance traction for vehicles. Motorists are reminded that bridges and overpasses freeze before roads and caution should be exercised if travel is absolutely necessary.
Reminders:
- Stay home. Avoid all nonessential travel.
- Do not pass or cut off snow plows.
- Give crews time and space to treat roads, with extra caution in work zones.
- If snow or ice is on the road, conditions are hazardous.
- Remove snow and ice from vehicles before traveling.
- Call 911 if you have an emergency.
- Visit www.511Virginia.org for the latest road conditions. Do not travel until precipitation stops and road conditions improve.
