ROUTE 638 BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT COMPLETED ON BUDGET AND AHEAD OF SCHEDULE
Detour has been lifted, roadway has reopened to traffic
ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY - More than one month ahead of schedule, contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) have completed a bridge replacement project on Route 638 (Mill Creek Drive) over Burnt Mill Swamp in Isle of Wight County. Route 638 between Route 645 (Yellow Hammer Road) and Mill Creek Trail reopened to traffic on July 15 following a five-month closure during construction.
Contractor crews replaced the 71-year-old bridge with a single-span, pre-stressed concrete box beam bridge, as well as widened the lanes to 9-feet and paved the shoulders at the bridge approaches in both directions.
Bryant Structures, Inc. started construction on the $984,794 project in January 2022 and completed the project on budget and ahead of the original contract completion date of Aug. 26, 2022.
