VDOT TO RESCHEDULE ROUTE 178 BRIDGE REPLACEMENT OVER OCCOHANNOCK CREEK PUBLIC HEARING
Safety measures to prevent COVID-19 community spread causes cancellation in Accomac County.
SUFFOLK -VDOT will reschedule the public hearing concerning Route 178 (Shields Bridge Road) bridge replacement over Occohannock Creek in Accomack County, following the cancellation of the advertised date.
A new meeting date has not been confirmed. The April 8 meeting has been cancelled due to current COVID-19 safety guidance concerning public gatherings.
This project is located on Route 178 (Shields Bridge Road) in Accomack County. The bridge over Occohannock Creeek will be replaced with a new structure. The current bridge was built in 1933 and has reached the end of its service life.
The project includes replacement of the bridge over Occohannock Creek and approaching roadway work on either side of the existing bridge location. The proposed bridge provides more than 9-inches of additional clearance over the waterway than the existing bridge, and will have two 11-foot travel lanes and 4-foot paved shoulders. There will be a detour in place when Route 178 (Shields Bridge Road) is closed to construct the new bridge and approaches.
This project enhances safety on Route 178 (Shields Bridge Road) by replacing a structurally deficient bridge structure with a new bridge that is able to support modern traffic both in volume and vehicle weights.
The total estimated cost for this project is $5.4 Million, including $900,000 for preliminary engineering, $500,000 for right of way and $4.0 Million for construction.
