ROUTE 636 (HOOD DRIVE) WILL CLOSE BRIEFLY FOR TREE REMOVAL ON WEDNESDAY, DEC. 7
Connector road between Route 1 and Route 208 (Courthouse Road) in Spotsylvania will close from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for tree removal

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Route 636 (Hood Drive) in Spotsylvania County will be closed to through traffic between Route 1 and Route 208 (Courthouse Road) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 7.

Several large trees must be removed before construction begins in spring 2023 on an intersection improvement project at Hood Drive and Courthouse Road. For the safety of the tree removal crews, this work must occur during daylight hours, and for the safety of travelers, the road must be closed during the tree removal.

In the event of inclement weather, or the need for an alternate date, the closure will be postponed to occur during the same hours on Wednesday, Dec. 14.

Message boards will be posted on connecting roads to notify travelers of the upcoming road closure. Signs will guide motorists along the detour route, which is Route 1 and Courthouse Road.

Access will be maintained during the road closure for residents and businesses located on Hood Drive, McGowan Drive and Wilcox Street.

Intersection Project Begins Spring 2023

The $5.1 million improvement project at the intersection is being funded through Virginia's SMART SCALE transportation funding program. Construction will be complete in spring 2024.

Additional turn lanes will be built on northbound Hood Drive to reduce congestion, and a raised median will be built on Hood Drive to separate northbound and southbound traffic between Courthouse Road and McGowan Drive. Additional sidewalk, crosswalks, and pedestrian crossing equipment will be installed.

Once construction begins in spring 2023, southbound Hood Drive traffic (traveling from Courthouse Road to Route 1) will be closed to through traffic. Through traffic will be detoured to use Courthouse Road and Route 1. The detour length is around 1.8 miles and will add an estimated 5 minutes of driving time. Northbound Hood Drive will remain open to all traffic during the construction project, and local traffic with residences or business on Hood Drive, McGowan Drive and Wilcox Street can continue to access the southbound lane.
