MAJOR ROADWORK WILL CAUSE OVERNIGHT DELAYS ON I-95
Drivers with destinations outside the Fredericksburg area are encouraged to take alternate routes with double lane closures and full traffic stops planned through early Friday, April 29

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. Drivers with destinations outside of the Fredericksburg area are encouraged to take alternate routes with major work zones scheduled overnight this week on Interstate 95 for construction to improve travel on the interstate.

Starting tonight, April 25, bridge demolition of the existing American Legion Road overpass in Stafford County will require full traffic stops on I-95 northbound and southbound as part of the 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension project.

The American Legion Road overpass is located at mile marker 138, between exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) and exit 140 (Courthouse Road). The overpass is being replaced to accommodate construction of two reversible high occupancy toll lanes in the I-95 median. Express lanes are being extended from its southern terminus point at exit 143 (Route 610) to the vicinity of exit 133 (Route 17).

Between midnight and 3 a.m., crews will stop all I-95 traffic intermittently between midnight and 3 a.m. Each stop may last up to 30 minutes.

Tomorrow night, crews with the same project will also be lifting and installing bridge beams for the future access point to the express lanes at the exit 148 (Quantico) interchange. To safely complete the work, the express lanes facility will close at exit 150 (Joplin Road) in Prince William County at 10 p.m. and all southbound express lanes traffic will be detoured to the general purpose lanes until 4 a.m.

During the bridge beam installation at exit 148, I-95 northbound will be reduced to one lane at exit 143 each evening starting Tuesday, April 26 through early Friday, April 29.

Additionally, final paving activities on I-95 southbound are underway near the exit 130 (Route 3) interchange, which will require double lane closures on local and through lanes with construction nearly complete on the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing Project. Crews will also have to close entrance and exit ramps at the same interchange for similar work. Message boards will be posted and temporary detour signs to direct drivers during the ramp closures, which will only occur between midnight and 3 a.m.

Overnight travelers on I-95 are advised to plan ahead to avoid delays. Motorists can check 511Virginia.org before starting their trip to find real-time updates on work zones and traffic conditions.

Weather permitting, lane closures on I-95 are scheduled at the following dates and times:
