VDOT News - Fredericksburg

Conditions on Interstate 95, primary and high volume secondary routes in the Fredericksburg area are clear while patches of ice and snow remain on some subdivision streets. Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews continue to plow and treat in some areas in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula.

As temperatures remain at or below freezing throughout the evening hours and overnight, VDOT crews will monitor and treat icy conditions as needed, especially near bridges, ramps and overpasses.

In addition to treating road conditions, crews in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula will also monitor wind speeds at major river crossings. High winds are expected to persist throughout the evening and overnight. If sustained winds reach 30 mph over a period of 30 minutes, or there are frequent wind gusts of 45 mph or greater, VDOT will post an advisory notice on the bridge.

Notices will be posted on message boards staged at the bridges, and communicated through VDOT news releases, VDOT social media platforms, and on 511Virginia.

High Winds Protocol for Major Bridges• Norris Bridge, which carries Route 3 over the Rappahannock River between Lancaster and Middlesex counties

• Downing Bridge, which carries Route 360 over the Rappahannock River between Richmond County and the Town of Tappahannock
• Route 223 bridge over Milford Haven, which connects mainland Mathews County with Gwynn's Island
• Eltham Bridge, which carries Route 30/Route 33 traffic over the Pamunkey River and connects the Town of West Point and New Kent County 
• Lord Delaware Bridge, which carries Route 33 over the Mattaponi River and connects the Town of West Point and King and Queen County

What You Need To Know:

• Many of the traffic signals remain dark or flashing with the loss of power in many areas
• Follow proper procedure when a traffic signal is out
• Traffic cameras on 511Virginia.org continue to be out of service with the major power outage.
• Report downed trees, tree debris, or other roadway hazards to VDOT’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623) or online at https://my.vdot.virginia.gov. The Customer Service Center is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to take reports and answer questions.
• If you come across a downed power line, do not try to move it. Contact your local authorities.
• VDOT crews will continue to work with tree contractors and utility crews to coordinate response efforts reports of downed trees and power lines.
