FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The schedule to activate temporary traffic signals that will direct traffic entering and exiting Interstate 95 northbound at the exit 133 (Route 17) interchange in Stafford County has been adjusted and will go into full color operation on Friday, Dec. 2.

Crews will need to close the entrance ramp ahead of activing the temporary traffic signals which will direct traffic at the I-95 northbound on- and off-ramps through spring 2024 as part of the I-95 Northbound Rappahannock River Crossing Project.

Between midnight and 3 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30 through early Friday, Dec. 2, the Route 17 northbound ramp to enter I-95 northbound will close.

Drivers will be detoured to continue north on Route 17 then use the on-ramp to southbound I-95 then use the loop ramp from Route 17 southbound to enter I-95 northbound.

The new signals are located east of the I-95 overpasses.

Starting Thursday, Dec. 1, signal lights will begin to flash. On Friday, Dec. 2, the traffic signals will go into full color operation.

The I-95 Northbound Rappahannock River Crossing project is rebuilding the remaining Route 17 overpass in need of replacement at the exit 133 interchange.

On Dec. 2, as the traffic signals are placed in full color operation, crews will close the single lane bridge over Route 17 that carries I-95 northbound ramp traffic, and the loop ramps from Route 17 southbound to I-95 northbound, and from I-95 northbound to Route 17 northbound.

What Drivers Can Expect

Once the traffic signals go into full color operation on Dec. 2, all I-95 northbound traffic exiting to Route 17 northbound and southbound at exit 133 will use a single exit ramp.

Exiting traffic with a destination for Route 17 Business (Warrenton Road) toward Falmouth will use a right turn lane on the exit ramp.

Exiting traffic traveling to Route 17 northbound will have dual left turn lanes on the ramp.

To enter I-95 northbound from Route 17 southbound, motorists will enter dual left turn lanes controlled by the new traffic signals.

Message boards will be posted to warn motorists to the new signals and interchange modifications.

Drivers are urged to remain alert and expect brief delays as the new traffic signals are activated later this week.

Signal timing will be coordinated with signals at adjacent intersections and along the Route 17 corridor to maximize traffic flow. Traffic conditions will be monitored closely after the signals activation, and signal timing will be adjusted as needed to reduce delays on Route 17 and along the I-95 northbound ramps.

I-95 North Mega Work Zone Dec. 5 -7: Stay Away to Avoid Delay

Starting at 5 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 5, a 36-hour work zone with major traffic impacts will occur to support the opening of a new interstate bridge over the Rappahannock River. The new bridge is located at mile marker 132, between the City of Fredericksburg and Stafford County. Within the same work zone, crews building the 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension will place beams for future flyover ramp north of exit 133 (Falmouth/Warrenton).

Next week, drivers with destinations north of the Fredericksburg area should access exit 104 (Route 207/Carmel Church) in Caroline County to use Route 301.
