FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews have mobilized ahead of forecast light snow expected to fall through Sunday afternoon in the Fredericksburg area and western portions of Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula.

Drivers are encouraged to use additional caution if traveling today, and adjust travel plans as needed for road conditions in their area. Travel is always hazardous when ice and snow are present on the road surface.

Before starting a trip, motorists are encouraged to monitor news and weather sources, and check 511virginia.org for real-time road conditions along their route. Currently, roads are clear, but conditions may change rapidly once precipitation begins.

Once snow begins, crews will apply salt to help reduce icing, and sand to provide traction for motorists' vehicle tires. Plowing will occur when around 2 inches of snow or slush has accumulated on the road surface.

Interstate 95 and primary routes in the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula were pre-treated with brine solution, which can reduce the risk of hazardous road conditions during a storm, and helps crews with snow removal. But even with pre-treatment, slick surfaces are still possible.

With temperatures expected to remain below freezing overnight Sunday into Monday morning, crews will remain mobilized in emergency response to treat for icy conditions, and any re-freeze from wet pavement today.

What Motorists Should Know

• Monitor road conditions at 511Virginia before starting a trip.
• Plan to adjust travel as needed for road conditions in your area
• If you will be traveling, allow extra time for your trip, slow down, and increase following distance between vehicles
• Use additional caution while traveling on bridges, ramps and overpasses, which freeze first due to lower pavement temperatures
• Residents are encouraged to consider that if their driveway or sidewalk is too icy or slick for walking, road conditions may also be slippery
