VDOT News - Fredericksburg

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews are currently treating icy spots on area roads this morning, and are circulating to monitor for hazardous road conditions, with a risk of wet pavement refreezing from yesterday's snow and rain.

Temperatures remain below freezing. Travelers are advised to proceed with caution if driving this morning, especially on lower-volume secondary roads, and on bridges, ramps and overpasses, which are more likely to experience refreeze due to lower pavement temperatures. Allow extra travel time to avoid being rushed, and plan to reduce speed, and increase following distance between vehicles.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews will remain mobilized until temperatures rise above freezing, and will continue to apply sand and salt to address icing on area roads. VDOT Park & Ride commuter lots are also being monitored and treated with sand and salt as needed.

Interstate 95 and primary routes in the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula were pre-treated with brine solution ahead of this weekend's snow. This can reduce the risk of hazardous road conditions during a storm, and helps crews with snow removal. But even with pre-treatment, roads may still have isolated icy patches from refreezing wet pavement.

What Motorists Should Know

• VDOT crews are actively treating roads for spot icing
• If you will be traveling, allow extra time for your trip, slow down, and increase following distance between vehicles
• Use additional caution while traveling on bridges, ramps and overpasses, which freeze first due to lower pavement temperatures, and on secondary roads carrying light traffic volumes
• Residents are encouraged to consider that if their driveway or sidewalk is too icy or slick for walking, road conditions may also be slippery
