Crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will continue brining operations on major routes tomorrow, Jan. 14 in the Fredericksburg District with the potential of snow and ice this weekend.

Today, Jan. 13, crews sprayed a salt brine solution to Interstate 95 northbound and southbound between exit 150/Joplin Road in Prince William County to mile marker 101 in Caroline County.

VDOT crews will pre-treat primary routes in the Fredericksburg region tomorrow ahead of the winter weather storm forecasted for Sunday, Jan. 16.

Workers in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula areas will continue pre-treating primary roadways, which are routes numbered 599 and below.

Crews will apply the brine to as many roads as possible tomorrow. Motorists may experience daytime delays on the various routes with the slow-moving operation.

The brine trucks travel at slower speeds to spray the salt brine solution onto the road with precision and to ensure an adequate amount is absorbed in the pavement.

The salt brine solution helps prevent ice from bonding to the pavement during winter weather, which can reduce the risk of hazardous travel conditions and assists crews with snow and ice removal.

Drivers should continue to monitor local forecasts and make travel plans now before this weekend.

On Sunday, drivers should avoid unnecessary travel with the chance of dangerous weather and road conditions during or even after the storm. Even with pre-treatment, icy to slick conditions remain possible.

VDOT’s online snow plow tracking map will be activated once 2” of snow or more has accumulated. VDOT and contractor trucks are equipped with automatic vehicle location technology, and can be monitored on the tracker during snow removal operations.
