BRIDGE REPLACEMENT COMPLETE ON POOR HOUSE LANE IN KING AND QUEEN COUNTY
Detour lifted this afternoon as Poor House Lane reopened to traffic at bridge over Market Swamp
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Route 631 (Poor House Lane) in King and Queen County reopened to through traffic today after the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) finished a bridge replacement over Market Swamp.
Traffic had been detoured since construction began in late February 2022. VDOT's state forces bridge crew replaced the previous timber deck bridge with a 46-foot concrete slab span structure with concrete abutments and piles.
The bridge has no vehicle weight posting. The previous bridge, built in 1961, was posted with a 15-ton vehicle weight limit, which restricted heavier vehicles from crossing.
Around 187 vehicles travel Poor House Lane daily, according to a 2018 VDOT traffic count.

VDOT’s 14-county Fredericksburg District includes the counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford in the Fredericksburg area; Northumberland, Richmond, Lancaster and Westmoreland counties in the Northern Neck; Essex, Gloucester, King & Queen, King William, Mathews and Middlesex counties in the Middle Peninsula.
