ROUTE 17 TRAFFIC PATTERN CHANGES NEAR I-95 OVERPASS IN SPOTSYLVANIA
Route 17 northbound ramp to Route 1 will partially close starting Friday, March 12 as construction advances to build a new four-lane interstate overpass
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Travelers can expect several traffic pattern changes this week in the Cosner’s Corner area in Spotsylvania County as construction advances to build a new four-lane Interstate 95 overpass on Route 17, and to widen Route 17 near the bridge.
On Friday, March 12, a single lane of the Route 17 northbound ramp to Route 1 will close. The lane is anticipated to remain closed through early 2022. This right turn lane from Route 17 to Route 1 is closing to allow crews to build the first half of a new four-lane overpass spanning I-95. View an online map of this traffic pattern change.
Route 17 northbound travelers can use Mills Drive to access Route 1.
Intersection Turn Lane Changes at Germanna Point Drive Next Week
Motorists will continue to be able to travel in all directions during the construction project at the Route 17 intersection with Germanna Point Drive and Hospital Boulevard.
However, several turn lanes at the intersection will be merged to provide space for work zone barriers, construction crews and equipment.
On Route 17 northbound, the separate right turn lane to Germanna Point Drive will close, and drivers will use a shared right turn lane and through travel lane at the traffic signal.
On Germanna Point Drive, the separate right turn lane to Route 17 northbound will close, and drivers will use a shared right turn lane and through travel lane at the traffic signal.
Turn lane changes are scheduled to occur on Tuesday, March 16.
Pedestrian Access Restriction Begins on Monday, March 29
Pedestrians will be prohibited from using the Route 17 overpass starting Monday, March 29 through early 2024. Barricades will be installed on either side of the bridge to restrict pedestrians from entering the work zone. Signs will also be installed to reflect this change.
Project Background
Construction started in late December 2020 to build the $23.5 million project.
Route 17 will be expanded to four travel lanes between Latitude Street and just east of the Hospital Boulevard and Germanna Point Drive intersection.
A shared-use path for pedestrians will be built along the southern side of Route 17 and sidewalk will be built along the northern side of Route 17. Pedestrian crossing equipment and crosswalks will be added at intersection crossing locations.
The new overpass, travel lanes, sidewalk and path will open in early 2024.
View the project designs online at the project page.
Around 28,000 vehicles a day travel on Route 17 in the project area.
