ROUTE 14 DETOUR BEGINS WEDNESDAY, JAN. 20 IN GLOUCESTER, KING AND QUEEN
Work to build a new Poropotank Creek bridge at the county line will detour through traffic on Route 14 for approximately six months, through completion in July 202
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Construction is starting in late January on a project to replace a bridge on Route 14 (Buena Vista Road/Adner Road) at the Gloucester County and King and Queen County line.
Through traffic on Route 14 will be detoured for around six months while a new bridge is installed over Poropotank Creek. The project work zone is located on Route 14 approximately one mile west of the intersection with Route 17 (George Washington Memorial Highway).
The detour will start on Wednesday, January 20, weather permitting. Motorists are advised to follow the recommended detour route:
• Route 33 (Lewis B. Puller Memorial Highway)
• Route 17
View an online map of the detour route.
Message boards are being placed this week to alert travelers to the upcoming road closure at the bridge and the start date for the detour. Signs will be in place to guide motorists along the detour route once it is in effect.
The new bridge is scheduled to open to traffic in July 2021.
Project background
The existing bridge over Poropotank Creek was built in 1938 and is structurally deficient. It is currently posted with a vehicle weight limit of 27 tons for single-unit vehicles and 40 tons for tractor-trailers.
Virginia’s State of Good Repair program is funding the estimated $3.4 million replacement cost for a new bridge. When the new bridge opens, vehicles of all legal weights will be permitted to travel over it.
Around 4,900 vehicles a day travel on Route 14 in the project area.
The project contractor is Bryant Contracting, Inc.
