UPDATE: Road resurfacing work in the Town of West Point has been postponed to begin on Monday, March 29.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – This spring, the Virginia Department of Transportation has scheduled resurfacing work to improve secondary road conditions in the Town of West Point, south of Route 33 (14th Street).

Preliminary activities to prepare the underlying road surface will begin on Monday, March 22.

Through June 2021, drivers may encounter mobile lane closures between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. in this area. Most work will occur on weekdays, but periodic weekend work may occur.

Road Resurfacing Work

During 2020, many secondary routes in West Point north of 14th Street were resurfaced with a multi-phase treatment that included a cape seal overlay. This spring, this work will continue south of 14th Street.

Cape seal is designed to improve the condition of the road, extend the life of the pavement and prevent further deterioration. When complete, the road surface will have a uniform color and appearance that will cover previous pothole repairs and cracking. Motorists will have a skid-resistant travel surface.

What Residents Can Expect

This work will be completed in three phases. Starting next week, contractor crews will begin the first phase by micro-milling roads south of 14th Street to remove an inch or less of the existing asphalt. Crews will begin on 1st Street and proceed north. Micro-milling is anticipated to continue through mid-April.

In late April, crews anticipate starting the second phase. Workers will seal the road surface with a mixture of liquid asphalt and stone. To prevent asphalt from damaging vehicles, it is blotted with a layer of stone dust. There will be a rougher surface than usual during this phase. Pedestrians and bicyclists should use caution during this temporary condition.

In May, crews will enter the third phase, which is to apply a final travel surface, which is the cape seal overlay.

In June, crews will sweep any remaining sand and gravel from streets that has not dissipated from wind and vehicle traffic.

Throughout the project, “No Parking” signs will be posted on streets where crews will be working during the upcoming week. We ask residents to please park any vehicles off the street during these brief periods, so workers can complete the project as quickly as possible and cover the entire road surface.
