FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – A project to improve the Route 30 and Route 360 intersection in the Central Garage area of King William County was completed this week, finishing around two months ahead of schedule.

The $1.4 million project, funded through the state SMART SCALE funding program, expanded turn lane capacity at the intersection to enhance safety and reduce delays.

Sidewalk was built along the south side of Route 30 to help pedestrians and bicyclists travel through the intersection, assisted by new pedestrian crossings, a pedestrian refuge area, and pedestrian crossing signal equipment.

Travelers can now use dedicated right and left turn lanes on eastbound Route 30 as they approach Route 360, along with a through travel lane.

On Route 30 westbound, the pavement was re-striped with fresh lane markings to create a left turn lane, through travel lane, and right turn lane.

Traffic signal equipment was upgraded to accommodate the additional turn lanes.

Construction began in July 2020, and was scheduled to be complete in June 2021.

The project contractor was Howard Brothers Contractor, Inc., of Charles County.

Project Background

King William County submitted an application to build this project through Virginia’s SMART SCALE transportation funding program.

SMART SCALE was established to choose the right transportation projects for funding and ensure the best use of limited tax dollars. Potential projects that have been determined to meet a need identified in VTrans – the state’s long-range multi-modal transportation plan – are scored based on safety, congestion, accessibility, land use, economic development and the environment.

Once projects are scored and prioritized, the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) has the best information possible to select projects for funding.
