FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Motorists are advised to delay unnecessary travel Tuesday morning, as mixed precipitation and low temperatures are combining to create slick road surfaces.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews have treated roads with sand and salt overnight to reduce icing and enhance driver traction on state-maintained roads. Crews remain mobilized this morning to monitor for icing across the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula as needed.

Roads have visible pavement and cleared travel lanes. But a transparent glaze of black ice is possible as any wet pavement is likely to have frozen overnight, especially on roads carrying less traffic, and on hills, curves, and in turn lanes and median crossovers.

Slick spots may also be more likely on bridges, overpasses, and ramps, which freeze first due to lower pavement temperatures.

VDOT crews will remain mobilized to treat roads for icing as needed until temperatures rise and road conditions improve.

If travel is absolutely necessary, motorists should plan to use extreme caution this morning. Allow extra travel time and significantly reduce vehicle speed. Increase following distance between vehicles to add reaction time. Use vehicle headlights for a clear view of the road ahead and to make your vehicle more visible to other travelers.

• Clean snow and ice from your vehicle before starting a trip. This will improve your visibility of the road ahead, and it will prevent snow and ice from becoming a flying debris hazard for other travelers.
• Give VDOT crews space to work. Keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind trucks and other equipment that are plowing or treating the road. Do not pass a spreader.
• Remember to move over and slow down for stopped vehicles with flashing, blinking or alternating blue, red or amber lights.
