FREDERICKSBURG DISTRICT: ROADS REMAIN SLICK
While most roads are clear, drivers should limit unnecessary travel overnight and tomorrow morning

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is asking drivers to limit unnecessary travel overnight and tomorrow morning with road conditions remaining slick and the potential for black ice.

Any wet pavement remaining from melted snow may refreeze again and turn into black ice overnight, especially on roads carrying less traffic, on hills, curves, turn lanes and median crossovers.

Slick spots may also be more likely on bridges, overpasses, and ramps, which freeze first due to lower pavement temperatures.

Hazardous travel conditions are expected to continue into Tuesday’s morning rush hour.

As air temperatures fall, pavement temperatures are also expected to drop creating the potential for icy conditions on roadways.

Crews spent most of today applying sand and salt to melt ice and improve motorist traction across the Fredericksburg area, western Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula.

Workers will continue to patrol roads overnight and treat any icy, hazardous conditions that may develop.

If travel is absolutely necessary, drivers are encouraged to use extreme caution and:

  • Check real time road conditions at http://www.511virginia.org/
  • Plan to allow extra travel time
  • Remove all snow and ice from vehicle
  • Drive for conditions by reducing your vehicle speed
  • Increase following distance between vehicles
