FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Travelers are encouraged to delay travel this morning in the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula if possible, with freezing drizzle lingering and temperatures hovering just above freezing.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews continue to treat roads with sand and salt for potential icing, focusing extra attention on surfaces that are most likely to freeze, including bridges, ramps and overpasses.

But any wet pavement may have frozen overnight, creating a potentially hazard surface for driving.

VDOT crews worked overnight and remain mobilized this morning to plow away patches of remaining snow and slush, in addition to spreading treatment materials and abrasives for icing.

Interstate 95 is clear. Primary roads in the Fredericksburg area and Northern Neck are in minor condition, with visible travel lanes but lingering patches of snow and slush. Secondary roads in these areas are in minor to moderate condition, with greater snow coverage on secondary roads carrying light traffic.

Overnight, crews made progress plowing many subdivisions and residential areas, but more work remains Friday to reach all state-maintained roads.

Roads are clear in Mathews, Middlesex and Gloucester counties in the lower end of the Middle Peninsula.

Several roads were closed briefly overnight for downed trees. Falling debris continues to be a potential hazard for motorists with more freezing precipitation continuing to fall. Tree removal crews are available across the district to assist with downed trees and tree branches.

VDOT crews will remain mobilized until all state-maintained roads are safe for travel, and will continue to treat and plow roads around the clock in rotating shifts.

What Motorists Should Know

Delay travel this morning if possible: Any wet pavement may have frozen overnight, and freezing drizzle continues to fall in near-freezing temperatures.
