SUNNYBANK FERRY: BACK IN SERVICE MONDAY, DEC. 14
Passengers can cross the Little Wicomico River again in Northumberland County, following a maintenance project to paint the vessel and add new vehicle ramps
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Service is resuming Monday, Dec. 14, on the Sunnybank Ferry in Northumberland County after an extensive maintenance project to renew the vessel.
Service has been suspended since summer 2020, and the boat has undergone routine cleaning and maintenance in drydock. New ramps were installed, which vehicles use to travel on and off the ferry from the dock. A fresh coat of paint protects the boat exterior.
“We are excited to restore this ferry service and save travel time for residents and businesses who rely on it as part of their daily commute, and for visitors who enjoy the access it provides crossing the Little Wicomico River,” said David Beale, P.E., Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Northern Neck Resident Engineer. “We are grateful for the community’s patience as the ferry was refurbished so we can provide reliable service for passengers.”
Service is scheduled to resume Monday, weather permitting. Ferry service may be affected by wind, weather and tides. Real-time updates on ferry service are available on 511Virginia.
When compared with the land driving route, riding the Sunnybank Ferry to cross the river on Route 644 saves around 20 minutes of travel time. The ferry transports an average of 600 passengers a month.
The maintenance project cost was approximately $119,000, and was completed by Severn Yachting, LLC.
