FREDERICKSBURG, Va. –Traffic on Route 223 (Cricket Hill Road) in Mathews County will stopped for up to 15-minute intervals overnight Thursday evening to allow crews to perform maintenance at the bridge over Milford Haven to Gwynn’s Island.

Motorists will be stopped several times between 11 p.m. Thursday, July 23 and 5 a.m. Friday, July 24. Traffic will be cleared in between each full 15-minute traffic stop.

Emergency vehicles will be able to pass at all times during the work zone.

The bridge over Milford Haven connects Gwynn’s Island with mainland Mathews County. The bridge has a moveable swing span, which opens frequently to allow marine traffic to pass.

During recent periods of intense heat, the bridge’s movable swing span has become stuck in the open position. When this occurs, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews pump water on the bridge’s steel grid deck to cool its temperature, and force the swing span closed. Pumping equipment is staged at the bridge for a rapid response.

On Thursday evening, crews will perform maintenance to the bridge’s steel grid deck and movable swing span to reduce the risk of heat-related travel disruptions.

Message boards have been posted to notify motorists of the upcoming traffic stops.
