CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON NEW ROUTE 743 BRIDGE OVER SOUTH RIVER IN CAROLINE COUNTY MONDAY, DEC. 28
The existing bridge will remain open to traffic during construction
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. –The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin construction of a new bridge on Route 743 (Clifton Road) over South River in Caroline County on Monday, Dec. 28.
The existing wooden bridge was built in 1959. The bridge is structurally deficient and is currently posted at 10-tons.
The new bridge will have a concrete deck and beams and the 10-ton weight restriction will be removed. Heavier trucks will be permitted to cross the new bridge.
The new bridge will be built next to the existing structure.
During construction, drivers will continue to use the existing bridge until the new structure is complete and open to traffic.
The $1.9 million project, funded by the State of Good Repair program, is expected to be complete in Oct. 2021.
The project contractor is Burleigh Construction, Inc.
