WYCHE ROAD OPENS ON NEW ALIGNMENT ON THURSDAY, MAY 16 IN STAFFORD COUNTY
Wyche Road traffic will shift onto a new alignment to let construction crews continue work building the redesigned Exit 140 interchange and Courthouse Road widening in Stafford
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Wyche Road traffic in Stafford County will be shifted onto a new alignment next week as construction crews continue to rebuild the Interstate 95 Exit 140 interchange and widen Courthouse Road to four lanes.
View an online map of the Wyche Road alignment that will open at a new intersection with Courthouse Road on Thursday, May 16, weather permitting. The shift is anticipated to occur after the morning peak travel period.
Wyche Road remains under construction in this area. When the road opens on May 16, it will not be in its final condition. Motorists will experience temporary traffic patterns, signs, pavement conditions, and pavement markings. An additional traffic shift on Wyche Road will be required later in the project.
Starting on May 16, motorists on Courthouse Road seeking to reach Wyche Road must use the new intersection, which is slightly east of the current intersection. Traffic will no longer be able to access Wyche Road from the entrance to the temporary Park & Ride commuter lot and traffic signal.
Message boards will be posted on Wyche Road and Courthouse Road before and after the shift to alert drivers to the new access point.
Traffic signal equipment has been installed at the intersection of the new Wyche Road at Courthouse Road, but it will remain covered until summer/fall 2019, when signal equipment is anticipated to be activated.
The signal at the new Wyche Road intersection will not be activated until construction of Florida Rock Drive is completed in summer/fall 2019. Florida Rock Drive will serve as the entrance and exit to the existing Park & Ride commuter lot from Courthouse Road, using the new Wyche Road location.
When the project is complete, the finished commuter lot will have two additional entrances. Both entrances will be on Old Courthouse Road, which will be the new name of the existing Courthouse Road.
Project Background
Construction is more than halfway complete on a $195 million Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) project to reconstruct Exit 140 as a diverging diamond interchange with new overpasses. The project is also widening Courthouse Road to four lanes over two miles, from Route 1 to just west of Ramoth Church Road and Winding Creek Road.
When the project is finished, there will be around 1,100 parking spaces across two Park & Ride commuter lots that will offer a dedicated pickup and drop-off area for carpools, vanpools and transit riders.
Construction is on schedule for project completion by July 31, 2020.
