FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and its contractor will continue work on the Downing Bridge through the end of September 2019.

Route 360 over the Rappahannock River in the Tappahannock area will be reduced to one lane overnight up to seven days a week after the Labor Day holiday.

The project schedule for the Downing Bridge work has been extended beyond the original completion date of late August 2019.

Overnight travelers can expect lane closures and brief delays on the Downing Bridge between Richmond County and the Town of Tappahannock between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. nightly, weather permitting.

Automated flagging devices will direct one-way, alternating traffic through the work zone,

Message boards are posted at both bridge approaches to alert motorists to the overnight work and potential delays.

Crews began spot painting and concrete repairs underneath the structure earlier this month as part of a districtwide bridge repair project.

Weather permitting, work on the Downing Bridge is anticipated to be complete by the end of September 2019.

Project Background

The ongoing project will improve the condition of six bridges at multiple locations by 2020.

Crews are repairing the beam ends of each structure to extend the life of the bridge and ensure they remain able to carry all vehicle traffic of legal weights.

The $2.1 million project is being financed with State of Good Repair funds, which are targeted at improving or replacing structurally deficient bridges across Virginia. 

Structurally deficient does not mean a bridge is unsafe for travel, but it is an indicator that a bridge needs maintenance or repair work to improve its condition. 

Construction on the districtwide project began in April 2018 and will continue work through February 2020.
