FREDERICKSBURG – The public is invited to attend a public meeting on March 19 to learn more about a project to widen the I-95 southbound Exit 126 ramp onto Route 1 southbound and widen Route 1 southbound from the I-95 exit ramp to Southpoint Parkway.  The project also includes safety improvements on Southpoint Parkway in the Massaponax area of Spotsylvania County.  

A design public hearing will be held:

Stop by anytime between 5-7 p.m. to review displays, proposed design plans, and discuss project concerns with Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) staff.

Written and oral comments on the project will be accepted at the public meeting, and afterward through Saturday, March 30, 2019.

Project Background 

The I-95 southbound Exit 126 widening will provide two right turn lanes from the Exit 126 off-ramp from I-95 southbound to Route 1 southbound, and two right turn lanes from Route 1 southbound onto Southpoint Parkway. Southpoint Parkway will also be widened from Route 1  to the existing turn lane at the Longhorn Steakhouse. 

The project will reduce the stacking of traffic exiting I-95 southbound onto Route 1 at Exit 126 as well as reduce existing congestion along the Route 1 corridor near the I-95 interchange.

The Route 711 (Southpoint Parkway) safety improvements will add traffic islands along Route 711 to allow left-turns into driveways and restrict through and left-turning traffic from the side street movements. New pavement markings and signage will also be required at these locations. An additional right-turn lane will be added to the eastbound Route 711 approach to the intersection at Route 1.

Crosswalks, sidewalks and pedestrian crossing signals will be constructed along a portion of Southpoint Parkway as part of this project.
