I-95 Express Lanes
I-95 Express Lanes
Monday – Thursday, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. and Friday, 8 p.m. – 10 a.m. Saturday. Single travel lane closed in I-95 Express Lanes in Stafford between mile markers 145.5 and 143, which is north of Route 610 (Garrisonville Road). Lane closure for construction activities associated with the I-95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension project.
Express Lanes traffic will follow a temporary traffic detour within Express Lanes. When traveling southbound in the Express Lanes, drivers will use a flyover ramp to avoid construction activity. When traveling northbound, motorists will need to enter at the second entrance ramp, north of Garrisonville Road. Motorists traveling in Express Lanes should follow posted signs to navigate temporary traffic pattern during these hours.
I-95 Northbound
I-95 Northbound at Exit 140 (Courthouse Road)
Monday – Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Expect single lane closures on I-95 Northbound near Exit 140 (Courthouse Road) in Stafford for various construction activities for the future diverging diamond interchange.
I-95 Southbound
I-95 Southbound at Exit 140 (Courthouse Road)
Wednesday – Thursday, 4 a.m. – 10 a.m. Expect single lane closures on I-95 Southbound near Exit 140 (Courthouse Road) in Stafford for various construction activities for the future diverging diamond interchange.
I-95 Southbound at Exit 133 (Falmouth)
Tuesday – Wednesday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m. and Thursday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Expect a single lane closed near Exit 133 (Falmouth) in Stafford for construction activities as part of the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project.
Stafford County and City of Fredericksburg
Route 1 at Falmouth Bridge
Sunday − Thursday, 8 p.m. – 7 a.m. Expect single lane closures on Route 1 northbound or southbound at the Falmouth Bridge over the Rappahannock River for bridge deck repairs.
Route 3 Business at Chatham Bridge
Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Expect alternating single lane closure on Route 3 Business at the Chatham Bridge over the Rappahannock River. A routine, scheduled bridge inspection will be underway.
City of Fredericksburg
George Street and Sophia Street Utility Work
Utility work at the intersection of George and Sophia Streets is planned for October 28 – 30 (Monday – Wednesday). The work will involve excavation in the streets to confirm the location and depth of existing utilities. The work is associated with the Chatham Bridge rehabilitation project that will necessitate Verizon to install new conduits beneath the Rappahannock River. The conduit project will involve the setup of a boring rig and equipment in the 100 block of George Street and is anticipated to begin in early November and take 30 – 60 days to complete. A schedule for the boring work has not been confirmed at this time. The preliminary utility location work planned for October 28 – 30 will require temporary traffic disruptions; however, traffic flow is anticipated to be maintained by way of flaggers during the work activity. Stafford County
Route 1 Southbound at Potomac Creek Drive
Monday − Thursday, 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. and Friday, 7 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect a right lane closure on Route 1 southbound near Potomac Creek Drive for construction of a new left turn lane on Route 1 southbound.
Route 1 Southbound at South Campus Boulevard
Monday − Friday, 8:30 a.m. − 12 p.m. Expect a single lane closure on Route 1 southbound near South Campus Boulevard for construction activities as part of the Courthouse Road widening project.
Route 17 Northbound
Monday – Thursday, 7 p.m. – 6 a.m. Friday morning. Intermittent full traffic stops up to 30 minutes between midnight and 3 a.m. for demolition of I-95 overpass. Stopped Route 17 northbound traffic will be permitted to clear in between each full traffic stop. Virginia State Police will assist with traffic control. Single lane closures between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Route 17 Southbound
Monday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m. Friday morning. Intermittent full traffic stops up to 30 minutes between midnight and 3 a.m. for demolition of I-95 overpass. Route 17 near Fauquier County Line
Monday – Saturday, 7 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. Expect alternating lane closures on Route 17 near the Stafford County and Fauquier County line to repair the bridges over Deep Run near Hartlake Road.
Route 627 (Mountain View Road)
Monday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. Crews will install traffic signal equipment to display a flashing yellow arrow at the intersection of Route 627 (Mountain View Road) and Route 1209 (Choptank Road), which is in front of Margaret Brent Elementary School and Mountain View High School. Crews will also install high-visibility signal back plating. The flashing yellow arrow signal helps drivers turn left safely against oncoming traffic. Be alert to flaggers in the work zone to direct drivers through the intersection. Virginia State Police will assist with traffic control. Expect brief delays.
Route 629 (Andrew Chapel Road)
Monday – Tuesday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Drivers should expect one-way, alternating traffic near Jack’s Creek bridge. Crews will be collecting geotechnical samples for a future bridge project.
Route 630 (Courthouse Road) Daytime Work
Monday – Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. As part of the Courthouse Road widening project, expect brief delays with alternating, one-way traffic at the following locations:
- Austin Ridge Drive
- Courthouse Road between Cedar Lane to Walpole Street and Austin Ridge Drive to Red Oak Drive
- Ramoth Church Road
- Snowbird Lane
- Winding Creek Road between Courthouse Road and Embrey Mill Road
- Woodcutters Road
- Wyche Road
Route 630 (Courthouse Road) Overnight Work
Monday – Friday, 7 p.m. – 5 a.m. Expect nighttime flagging operations on Courthouse Road between Cedar Lane and Wapole Street for paving. Flaggers will direct alternating, one-way traffic on Courthouse Road.
Ramoth Church Road Overnight Work
Sunday – Saturday, 7 p.m. – 5 a.m. Expect nighttime flagging operations on Ramoth Church Road between Courthouse Road and Dog Patch Road for pipe work. Flaggers will direct alternating, one-way traffic near the work zone.
Snowbird Lane Road Overnight Work
Sunday – Saturday, 7 p.m. – 5 a.m. Expect nighttime flagging operations on Snowbird Lane between Courthouse Road and the dead end on Snowbird Lane for grading and pipe work. Flaggers will direct alternating, one-way traffic near the work zone.
Winding Creek Road Overnight Work
Sunday – Saturday, 7 p.m. – 5 a.m. Expect nighttime flagging operations on Winding Creek Road between Courthouse Road and Embrey Mill Road for pipe work. Flaggers will direct alternating, one-way traffic near the work zone.
Woodcutters Road Overnight Work
Sunday – Saturday, 7 p.m. – 5 a.m. Expect nighttime flagging operations on Woodcutters Road between Courthouse Road and Cutstone Drive for pipe work. Flaggers will direct alternating, one-way traffic near the work zone.
Spotsylvania County
Route 1 Northbound and Southbound
Sunday – Thursday, 8 p.m. – 7 a.m. Alternating single lane closures at the Route 1 bridge over the Po River, which is around 4 miles north of the Caroline County line. Bridge joint repairs.
Route 17 (Mills Drive) over I-95
Sunday – Thursday, 8 p.m. – 7 a.m. Single lane closure on Route 17 (Mills Drive) at the I-95 overpass. Bridge repairs.
Gloucester County
Route 641 (Tidemill Road)
Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Expect alternating lane closures on Route 641 (Tidemill Road) at the bridge over Sarah Creek, which is located between Route 17 and Guinea Road, for bridge repairs.
King and Queen County
Route 14
Monday – Thursday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Expect a mobile operation with flagging on Route 14 from Route 360 (Richmond Tappahannock Highway) to Route 614 (Devils Three Jump Road) for work as part of a resurfacing project.
King George County
Route 206 (Dahlgren Road)
Monday – Thursday, 8 p.m. – 7 a.m. A flagging crew will alternate one-way traffic on Dahlgren Road at the bridge over Williams Creek, which is less than a mile from Route 301. The work zone is needed to allow crews to make repairs to the bridge.
Route 218 (Caledon Road)
Monday – Tuesday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Installation of centerline rumble strips, pavement markers and line painting. Crews will be working on Route 218 between Route 206 and 1.3 miles east of Indiantown Road, and between Route 301 and Route 206. A flagging crew will direct traffic in the work zone. Motorists can expect significant travel delays and are advised to use alternate routes during work zone hours.
King William County
Route 360 Northbound
Monday – Sunday, 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Expect a single lane closure on Route 360 northbound between Mt. Pleasant Road and Commerce Park Drive for bridge beam repairs.
Middlesex County and Lancaster County
Robert O. Norris Bridge Inspection
Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Crews are conducting a routine inspection on the Robert O. Norris Bridge, which is located on Route 3 over the Rappahannock River. Drivers can expect a single lane closure on the bridge on weekdays through Thursday, Oct. 31. Automated flagging devices, operated by a certified flagging crew, will be used to direct drivers through the work zone.
Monday and Wednesday, 8:30 p.m. – 3 a.m. As part of a routine inspection on the Robert O. Norris Bridge, there will be a single lane closure on the bridge overnight on Monday, Oct. 21 into early Tuesday, and Wednesday, Oct. 23 into early Thursday. Within this time period, all traffic will be stopped for up to 20 minutes at a time, for up to 7 times. Congestion will be cleared in between each traffic stop. This will allow crews to test the bridge load rating. Automated flagging devices, operated by a certified flagging crew, will be used to direct drivers through the work zone.

Additional Construction Projects in Fredericksburg District
Caroline County
Route 646 (Fork Bridge Road): ROAD CLOSED
VDOT crews are replacing a structurally deficient bridge over Maracossic Creek on Route 646 (Fork Bridge Road). Motorists are encouraged to follow the posted detour route, which is approximately 7 miles, along Route 627 (Roundabouts Road/Mattaponi Trail) and Route 721 (Newtown Road). The bridge closed in September 2019 and is estimated to remain closed through December 2019.
City of Fredericksburg
Dixon Street Ramp Improvement
Crews are improving the Route 2 (Dixon Street) exit ramp from the westbound Blue & Gray Parkway in Fredericksburg as part of the upcoming Chatham Bridge rehabilitation project. The Chatham Bridge over the Rappahannock River will be closed to all traffic for a 16-month improvement project. Crews are building an additional left turn lane on the Dixon Street exit ramp to provide more storage for vehicles turning left onto Dixon Street from the Blue & Gray Parkway. This will keep the right turn lane accessible for vehicles using the detour to downtown Fredericksburg during the bridge closure. The $23.4 million Chatham Bridge rehabilitation project will be advertised to potential bidders in January 2020. The bridge may be closed to traffic as soon as May 2020. Stafford County
Route 1 Turn Lane at Potomac Creek Drive
Construction is underway to build a left turn lane from Route 1 southbound onto Potomac Creek Drive, near an industrial park entrance. Project estimated completion is July 2020. Please visit the project page.
Route 3 Business and Route 606 (Ferry Road) Intersection
Work underway to improve this intersection is estimated to be complete by the end of 2019. Motorists should be alert for construction activity on Route 3 Business and on Ferry Road between the CSX railroad crossing and Route 3 Business. Route 608 (Brooke Road): ROAD CLOSED
Brooke Road is closed to through traffic near Eskimo Hill Road. This is a Stafford County project to realign the roadway to improve safety and drainage. Brooke Road will remain closed with a detour during construction.
King William County
Route 662 (Sharon Road): ROAD CLOSED
Project schedule under development. Crews are repairing damage from Tropical Storm Michael. The project is reconstructing a slope near the road and replacing the culvert.
