FREDERICKSBURG – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) recently completed a $2.3 million project to upgrade traffic signal equipment along the Route 17 corridor in Gloucester County, as well as add pedestrian crossing devices and crosswalks at several intersections.

Over the past 18 months, traffic signal equipment was enhanced at 20 intersections on Route 17 between Glenns and Gloucester Point. Pedestrian crossing devices and crosswalks were added to three of the intersections.

With new equipment now in place, VDOT’s Traffic Operations Center and traffic signal technicians can now remotely adjust traffic signal timing at these intersections. This will allow VDOT to swiftly respond to incidents on Route 17 that cause disruption to normal travel patterns and adjust the signal timing as needed to reduce congestion. It will also allow VDOT to adjust signal timing during emergencies. Route 17 is designated as a hurricane evacuation route.

Additionally, pedestrian crossing devices and marked crosswalks were installed at three intersections to provide a safer environment for pedestrians to cross Route 17.

• Route 17 at Route 17 Business (Main Street)/Route 1075 (W. Main Street)

• Route 17 at Route 1024 (Beehive Drive)/ entrance to 7-11 store  

• Route 17 at Route 615 (Burleigh Road)/ Route 615 (Short Lane)

• Route 17 at Route 780 (Canon Way)  

• Route 17 at Route 628 (T.C. Walker Road)
