FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – A temporary traffic pattern is in place at the intersection of Route 17 and Brays Point Road in Gloucester County following a vehicle crash earlier today that damaged a traffic signal pole.

Motorists should use additional caution traveling through this intersection. Signs, barrels, message boards and flashing traffic signals provide direction for motorists on a temporary basis until new signal equipment can be installed. 

An armored truck struck and damaged a signal pole at the intersection today, requiring the removal of the pole and traffic signal equipment for Route 17 southbound.

The following temporary patterns are in place at the Route 17 and Brays Point Road intersection:

• Route 17 southbound traffic is free-flowing and does not stop at the intersection. Southbound traffic turning left onto Brays Point Road must yield to oncoming traffic. Message boards are posted encouraging southbound motorists to use caution.
• Route 17 northbound traffic has a flashing yellow signal. Through traffic should proceed with caution without stopping, while left turn traffic must yield to oncoming traffic.
• Westbound Brays Point Road traffic has a flashing red signal, which directs motorists to come to a full stop. Westbound Brays Point Road traffic is restricted to right turns only onto Route 17 northbound. Left turns are not permitted onto Route 17 southbound. Motorists seeking to access Route 17 southbound should turn right onto Route 17 northbound, and make a U-turn at a crossover approximately 700 feet to the north.

An average of 27,216 vehicles travel through the Route 17 and Brays Point Road intersection each day.
