VDOT News - Fredericksburg

FREDERICKSBURG – Route 660 (Sorghum Road) in King and Queen County is now open to traffic after crews installed a new bridge over Mill Stream to replace the structurally deficient structure.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) closed Sorghum Road in late February between Route 619 (Owens Mill Road) and Route 721 (Newtown Road).

Crews replaced the 1965 bridge with a new Glulam structure, which is a glued, laminated timber bridge engineered to carry modern vehicle weights. The replacement bridge also has steel beams.

Over the next few weeks, crews will install guardrail.

The former weight restriction of 17 tons for single axel vehicles and 23 tons for tractor-trailers has been removed.

Earlier today, crews lifted the eight mile detour and opened the road to traffic.

Sorghum Road carries an average of 160 vehicles a day, according to a VDOT traffic count.
