FREDERICKSBURG – Route 609 (Smokey Road) in King William County is open to traffic after crews installed a new bridge over Herring Creek to replace the structurally deficient structure.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) closed Smokey Road in late April.

VDOT’s bridge crew replaced the 1943 bridge with a new concrete structure, installed new guardrail and delineator signs.

The former weight restriction of 26 tons for single unit vehicles and 34 tons for tractor-trailers has been removed.  

Crews have lifted the six mile detour and opened the road to traffic.

Smokey Road carries an average of 300 vehicles a day, according to a VDOT traffic count.
