FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Resurfacing work to improve the ride on Route 17 Business and Route 33 in the Saluda area of Middlesex County will continue next week, but all lanes will remain open during the Fourth of July holiday travel period.

All lanes of Route 17 Business and Route 33 in Saluda will be open from noon Wednesday, July 3 through noon Friday, July 5.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and its contractor are milling and paving a 1.5-mile section of Route 17 Business from Route 17 near the entrance to Hardee’s and Food Lion and the intersection with Route 33 and Route 618 (Oakes Landing Road). The project is also milling and paving a 0.4-mile section of Route 33 east toward Cook’s Corner. Additionally, crews are patching deteriorated sections of the road prior to paving to improve the road’s foundation, which will ensure a smooth application of asphalt.

Motorists on Route 17 Business and Route 33 may encounter one-way, alternating traffic in the work zone during daytime or overnight hours, weather permitting. A flagging crew will direct traffic through the work zone.

Travelers are asked to limit distractions in the work zone, and to be alert for temporary rough pavement, traffic patterns and lane markings. When paving work is complete, fresh pavement markings will be painted throughout the work zone.

An average of 9,700 vehicles a day travel in the vicinity of Route 17 Business and the signalized intersection with Route 33 in Saluda.
