FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – A new traffic signal that will control traffic entering Interstate 95 northbound at Exit 118/Thornburg in Spotsylvania County at the Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road), Mallard Road and Dominion Raceway Avenue intersection will be activated next week.

The traffic signal will be activated on Monday, May, 6 and will flash for approximately 48 hours to allow motorists to adjust to its presence.

On Wednesday, May 8, the traffic signal will be placed into full color operation after the peak morning travel period.

Demolition of the old I-95 northbound on-ramp at the Exit 118 interchange is now underway after traffic was shifted to the new on-ramp earlier this week.

Westbound Mudd Tavern Road traffic will come to the new signal, turn left onto Mallard Road and go under the bridge to merge onto I-95 northbound. Eastbound Mudd Tavern Road traffic has a dedicated right turn lane to go under the bridge to enter I-95 northbound in an off-set diamond interchange.

Drivers will not see any changes to the I-95 southbound on- and off-ramps at Exit 118 at this time. Once construction is closer to completion, a new traffic signal will be activated to control traffic entering and exiting I-95 southbound.

Message boards will be posted later today to alert motorists to the new traffic signal.

The $22.4 million project began in October 2017 and is currently estimated to be complete in summer 2019.
