FREDERICKSBURG DISTRICT: RAIN-SLICKED ROADS MAY BECOME ICY SUNDAY AFTERNOON, EVENING
VDOT crews are mobilizing at noon Sunday ahead of plummeting temperatures that could transform wet pavement into an icy surface; Travelers should plan to check 511Virginia before starting a trip

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews in the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck, and Middle Peninsula will mobilize at noon Sunday ahead of swiftly falling temperatures that could lead to potentially icy road conditions.

Rain is forecast to fall Saturday evening and Sunday, but low temperatures Sunday afternoon and evening could cause any wet road surface to freeze. Temperatures will remain low overnight into Monday morning.

VDOT crews will patrol roads across the 14-county Fredericksburg District. Crews will apply treatment chemicals to improve traction and reduce icing.

Motorists may encounter black ice, which is a thin, nearly invisible layer of ice that forms on the road surface. If your sidewalk or driveway is slick, it’s a good indicator that the roads are too, and driving is not advised.

Motorists planning to travel are advised to check 511Virginia before starting a trip to see road conditions along their planned route, and plan to delay travel if road conditions become hazardous.

Motorists can download the free mobile 511 app for Apple and Android devices to stay connected, visit www.511virginia.org, or reach 511Virginia by calling 511 from any phone in Virginia.
