FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Motorists will encounter travel delays next week on Route 218 in King George County due to daytime lane closures for a continuing safety and paving project.

To avoid delays, motorists are encouraged to use Route 3 and Route 206 as alternate routes. No daytime lane closures have been scheduled for Route 3 or Route 206 while lane closures are underway on Route 218.

Message boards have been posted along Route 218 and nearby connecting routes to alert motorists to this upcoming work zone.

Next week, motorists on Route 218 can expect one-way, alternating traffic at the following dates, times and locations:

Route 218 (Caledon Road)

Monday, Sept. 30 – Friday, Oct. 4

• 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Crews will be milling and paving, and shoulder widening in some areas. Work will be underway on Route 218 between Route 206 and 1.3 miles east of Indiantown Road, and between Route 301 and Route 206. 

On Sunday and Monday evening, crews will finish final paving markings on Route 206. Motorists can expect one-way, alternating traffic due to a mobile work zone at the following dates and times:

Route 206, between Route 301 and Route 3

Sunday, Sept. 29 – Monday, Sept. 30

• 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Additionally, crews will finish pavement markings on Route 3 eastbound and westbound next week:

Route 3 Eastbound and Westbound

Sunday, Sept. 29 – Thursday, Oct. 3

• 7 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Expect alternating single lane closures on Route 3 between Route 610 (Saint Anthony Road) and Route 205 (Ridge Road).

Project Background

A combined safety and paving project in King George began in July 2019 to deliver a smoother travel surface on several high-volume roads, and reduce the risk of crashes at spot locations by adding centerline rumble strips and widening the road shoulders.

Throughout the project, work is scheduled to occur on Route 3, Route 206 (Dahlgren Road), Route 218 (Caledon Road), Route 614 (Potomac Drive), Route 624 (Owens Drive) and Route 1150 (Commerce Drive). Lee Hy Paving Corp. is the contactor for this project, which has an estimated total cost of $5 million.

Message boards are being posted in advance to notify motorists of the work locations, dates and times. Boards will be moved as crews progress from one route to the next.

Updated work schedules will be shared weekly in news releases, which will be posted on www.VirginiaDOT.org and shared through VDOT’s Fredericksburg District Twitter account and Fredericksburg District Facebook page.

It will also be included in the weekly lane closure list, Hot Spots, which is posted on Friday afternoons to VDOT’s Travel Center page.
