VDOT News - Fredericksburg

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. ⸺ Repair work continues to restore state-maintained roads in the Northern Neck, Middle Peninsula and Fredericksburg area that sustained severe damage during Tropical Storm Michael.

Route 642 (Knights Run Road) in Northumberland County is anticipated to reopen to traffic in mid-March 2019. Six additional roads are also under repair, and they are scheduled to reopen to traffic this spring or summer.

More than 100 state-maintained roads were closed in VDOT’s 14-county Fredericksburg District immediately following Tropical Storm Michael in October 2018. A total of seven roads remain closed for major reconstruction or replacement of pipes and culverts. Emergency procurement methods are being used to expedite repairs.

Updated, estimated construction schedules for the remaining roads closed by Tropical Storm Michael in Fredericksburg District are listed below:

Northumberland County

• Route 642 (Knights Run Road): Anticipated to reopen in mid-March 2019. This is a revision from the earlier announced reopening target of late February 2019. Crews are replacing two 60-inch drainage pipes with two 72-inch reinforced concrete drainage pipes and installing pipe headwalls. The new 72-inch pipes have been partially placed. Final construction activities will be underway over the next two weeks to fill in the area over the new pipes, grade the area, and install a new travel surface. A temporary gravel surface will be in place until June, when the road will be paved with asphalt at the same time as the Route 201 (Courthouse Road) work zone.

• Route 201 (Courthouse Road): Anticipated to reopen in June 2019. Crews are replacing a damaged set of four 96-inch drainage pipes with a triple set of concrete box culverts, with each culvert measuring 12 feet by 10 feet. Due to their size, the replacement culverts must be specially fabricated to these dimensions. The contractor has mobilized and has prepared the site for placement of the new culverts, which are anticipated to arrive in early March.

• Route 634 (Spring Road): Anticipated to reopen in July 2019. Crews are repairing the bridge and replacing a washed out section of road. The contractor has mobilized and grading work has begun. The project will first repair the road up to the bridge, followed by bridge deck repair.

Stafford County

• Route 1350 (Hamlin Drive): Anticipated to reopen in April 2019. Crews are repairing a void underneath the travel surface and replacing a damaged 72-inch corrugated metal drainage pipe with 54-inch pipes.

King William County

• Route 662 (Sharon Road): Anticipated to reopen in August 2019. Crews are reconstructing a slope near the road and repairing the culvert.

Westmoreland County

• Route 612 (Antioch Road): Anticipated to reopen to traffic in April 2019, but repairs will continue on site through July 2019. Crews are repairing a void underneath the road and replacing a washed out section of road. The contractor has mobilized and built the stream diversion required for construction to proceed. The road will reopen with a temporary gravel surface in April, but the road will be paved with asphalt in summer 2019.

• Route 600 (Nomini Grove Road): Anticipated to reopen in August 2019. Crews are repairing a void underneath the road and replacing a washed out section of road.

Motorists are reminded to adhere to all road closed signs and barricades, and to follow the posted detour route. Roads have been closed for traveler safety.
