BRACE FOR MULTIPLE WORK ZONES THIS WEEK ON I-95 IN THE FREDERICKSBURG AREA
Expect daytime and overnight lane closures on I-95 northbound and southbound, including a full traffic stop early Tuesday, Feb. 26
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Drivers should anticipate lane closures with multiple work zones scheduled throughout the day and overnight on Interstate 95 northbound and southbound in the Fredericksburg area, including a full traffic stop early Tuesday, Feb. 26.
Various construction activities and preliminary engineering work will be underway on the interstate for several projects:
- I-95 at Exit 140 (Courthouse Road) Reconfiguration project
- I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing
- I-95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension
- I-95 Northbound Rappahannock River Crossing
The majority of the lane closures are scheduled at night to minimize the impact to motorists. There are daytime single lane closures needed to allow crews to work in daylight for safety reasons. But there are no lane closures scheduled during high peak travel periods on I-95 northbound and southbound.
Weather permitting, the following lane closures are set to start tonight, Feb. 25:
I-95 Southbound
EXIT 136 (Centreport Parkway/Stafford County) to EXIT 130 (Route 3/Fredericksburg)

Mile Marker 139-138 (South of Exit 140/Courthouse Road)
- Saturday - Sunday, 12m. – 7 a.m.
Expect a single lane closure on I-95 southbound between mile marker 139 and mile marker 138, which is south of Exit 140 (Route 630/Courthouse Road) for preliminary engineering work for a future construction project.
I-95 Northbound
EXIT 133 (Route 17/Stafford County)
- Tuesday– Thursday, 9:30m. – 3:30 p.m.
Expect the single left lane to be closed on I-95 northbound near Exit 133 for construction activities. Expect heavy truck traffic in between mile markers 132 and 134 during the day. Be alert to trucks slowing down to enter or exit the median at various construction entrances throughout the work zone.
EXIT 130 (Route 3/Fredericksburg) to EXIT 136 (Centreport Parkway/Stafford County)
- Monday– Friday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.
- Friday – Saturday, 10 p.m. – 7 a.m.

I-95 Northbound and Southbound
EXIT 140 (Route 630/Courthouse Road) FULL Traffic Stop
- Tuesday, 12 a.m. – 5 a.m.
Crews will need to close all travel lanes on the interstate for utility work near the Exit 140 (Courthouse Road) interchange as they build a diverging diamond and widen Courthouse Road in Stafford County. I-95 northbound and southbound traffic near Exit 140 will be stopped for three intervals up to 30 minutes at a time after midnight on Tuesday, Feb. 26. Virginia State Police will slowly roll traffic on all travel lanes to a stop.
Traffic will be stopped up to 30 minutes intermittently until 5 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, for motorist safety. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
EXIT 118 (Route 606/Mudd Tavern Road) to EXIT 130 (Route 3/Fredericksburg)
- Tuesday– Thursday, 9:30m. – 3:30 p.m.
- Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Expect a mobile operation with alternating single lane closures. Crews will be replacing the reflective lens on the raised pavement markers. Motorists should expect slow moving construction equipment and possible delays near the mobile work zone. The mobile work zone will periodically pull over to allow congestion to clear.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is encouraging overnight travelers to use Route 1 or Route 301 to avoid delays.
Overhead message boards will warn drivers to stay alert for the work zones ahead and delays.
