MADISON CO. PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE IS CLOSED
Structural deterioration made Criglersville bridge unsafe for continued use

CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation has closed a pedestrian bridge crossing the Rose River off Route 642 (Lindsay Lane) in Criglersville, Madison County. The bridge was closed after an inspection determined that structural deterioration made the bridge unsafe for continued use.

Inspectors identified significant decay, rot and cracking in the deck timbers and deterioration of the structural members and safety features, including the fencing on both sides of the deck. Fraying and corrosion was also found in the bridge’s support cables.

The bridge has been used by residents for many years to cross the river to homes on the south side of the river. All those houses have alternate means of access.

VDOT will work with Madison County officials to determine how to address the condition of the bridge, including options for replacement and funding needs.
