CULPEPER — Snow is falling across Central Virginia and travel conditions will quickly become hazardous as the snow accumulates on roads and bridges. The Virginia Department of Transportation recommends against travel during the storm, which will continue through the day Wednesday and transition to sleet and freezing rain before finally changing to all rain early Thursday.

Interstate 64 in Albemarle and Louisa counties and I-66 in Fauquier County are in minor condition, with snow covering some of the road surface. Conditions vary on major highways across Central Virginia but most roads have patches of snow in the travel lanes. Travel will become dangerous across the region as the snow continues. Drivers who must be on the road should reduce speed, increase following distance and allow extra time for any essential travel.

As the snow began early Wednesday morning, VDOT crews first focused snow-removal operations on the interstates and primary highways. When conditions on the major highways improve, the crews will begin plowing secondary roads and work their way into neighborhood streets and low-volume rural routes. VDOT and contract snow-removal crews will continue working around the clock; VDOT’s goal is to have all state-maintained roads passable within 48 hours after the storm ends.

VDOT warns that travel is likely to remain hazardous through the day, especially as the snow changes to sleet and freezing rain. Those who must travel should use VDOT’s free 511 tools to find out about road conditions before leaving. Travel in most regions of Virginia will be affected by this winter storm, with many areas already report accumulating snow on the roads.
