Route 58 truck climbing lane project at Powell Mountain in Lee County is gearing up

Bristol, VA –The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Contractor Estes Brothers Construction, Inc., based out of Jonesville, Va., began a project this week to add a truck climbing lane to Route 58 at Powell Mountain in Lee County.

The $2.1 million construction project includes adding a 1,000-foot truck climbing lane to the west side of Powell Mountain, improving safety by giving motorists a safer way to pass trucks along the steep grade.

Motorists should be alert to periodic delays and watch for workers. Currently, crews are setting up concrete barriers along the right shoulder of eastbound Route 58.

The completion of the project is anticipated for September 2021.

The Route 58 truck climbing lane project is part of VDOT’s Smart SCALE program, created to prioritize transportation projects statewide. The project is valued at approximately $5 million, including design, right of way and construction. (END)
